How Does IVF Help Women Over 35 Facing Fertility Challenges? Unveiling Success Rates
Infertility is a growing concern in India, with millions of couples facing challenges in conceiving.
According to a report by Ernst and Young in 2022, 'Call to Action,' an estimated 27.5 million couples are affected by infertility issues in the country. This alarming statistic underscores the urgent need for greater awareness, support, and access to effective treatments for those struggling to start a family.
As women age, especially after 35, the chances of natural conception often decrease due to various factors such as
Declining egg quality
Reduced ovarian reserve
Hormonal changes
However, with advances in medical science, In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) has emerged as a promising solution for those struggling to conceive.
The Miracle of IVF: Understanding In Vitro Fertilization
IVF, commonly known as the test tube baby process, is a medical procedure where a woman’s eggs are fertilized with sperm in a lab setting. Once fertilized, the resulting embryos are transferred back into the woman’s womb to establish a pregnancy. This procedure is particularly helpful for women who have difficulty conceiving naturally due to age, health conditions, or other fertility-related issues.
How Does IVF Work ?
Ovarian Stimulation: The process begins with medication to stimulate the ovaries, encouraging them to produce multiple eggs. Normally, a woman releases one egg during her cycle, but with IVF, the goal is to retrieve several.
Egg Retrieval: Regular ultrasounds track the growth of the eggs. Once fully mature, usually between day 13-16 of the cycle, a doctor retrieves the eggs using a thin needle inserted through the vagina.
Fertilization in the Lab: The retrieved eggs are then fertilized in the lab with sperm, either from a partner or a donor. This process creates embryos.
Embryo Transfer: After a few days of monitoring the development of the embryos, the healthiest ones are selected and transferred back into the woman’s uterus.
Pregnancy Test: Two weeks after the embryo transfer, a pregnancy test is done to determine if the IVF procedure was successful.
IVF Success Rates and Age Considerations
India currently performs an average of 200,000 to 250,000 IVF cycles per year. However, experts predict a significant increase in demand, with the number of cycles expected to rise to between 500,000 and 600,000 annually in the future.
A study conducted by the Obstetrics and Gynaecology department at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi found that IVF success rates in India typically range from 30% to 35%. However, in favorable cases, these rates can climb as high as 40%. Notably, these figures align closely with global standards, particularly for women under 35.
While AIIMS provides accurate and transparent data, it's important to note that some private clinics in India may exaggerate their success rates. Claims of 70-80% success for women under 35 and 40-50% for women over 40 are often inflated and should be approached with caution.
While IVF has helped many women conceive, success rates decrease with age.
After the age of 42, the chances of success are significantly lower due to the natural decline in egg quality. In such cases, donor eggs or sperm may be considered as an alternative option. However, there have been cases where women over 42 have successfully conceived through IVF, though these instances are rare.
For women over 35 facing fertility challenges, IVF provides hope and an opportunity to experience motherhood. By combining modern medical advances with careful monitoring, IVF has transformed the lives of countless families around the world.
